When we spec linear stages for custom automation, the first question from the customer is almost always: “How heavy can it carry?”
But anyone who’s been in this trade for a few years knows that weight is only the beginning. The real killers are acceleration, overhung moments, mounting orientation, and duty cycle.
Last year, we retrofitted a CNC loader with a PSG stage. The customer insisted on a static payload of 80 kg. On paper it looked fine. But during acceleration the guide vibration shot up, and repeatability drifted from ±0.02 mm to ±0.08 mm. We had to swap to a larger screw diameter and re‑calculate the dynamic thrust before the machine would behave.
